Smith Farms × Black Roots Farm Partnership
Growing Land. Growing People. Growing Community.
Our Story
The Smith Farms × Black Roots Farm Partnership was founded on a simple belief: healthy communities begin with healthy land.
Rooted in generations of agricultural experience and stewardship, both farms recognize that farming is about more than production—it is about people, purpose, and caring for the resources that sustain us.
As agriculture faces challenges such as soil degradation, flooding, food insecurity, declining farmer participation, and community wellness, we are demonstrating a different approach—one that recognizes the connection between Soil, Air, Water, and human well-being. We believe healthy ecosystems support healthy people, and that responsible stewardship is essential for strong communities and a sustainable future.
Operating as a Farm Stewardship Consortium, five participating farms retain independent ownership while working together through a Resource Pooling Agreement to support conservation, education, land stewardship, and S.A.W.™ Grassroots Projects.
Together, we are building a stronger agricultural ecosystem that benefits both the land and the people who depend on it.
The S.A.W.™ Grassroots Projects Model
At the center of this partnership is the S.A.W.™ Grassroots Projects framework—Soil. Air. Water.
We recognize that the quality of our soil influences the food we eat, the quality of our air affects our health, and the condition of our water impacts every aspect of life. Together, these elements form the foundation of healthy ecosystems and healthy communities.
Through field demonstrations, restoration projects, educational retreats, workshops, camps, and community events, we seek to inspire practical action that improves environmental and human health.
Building an Agricultural Environmental Ecosystem
Our vision extends beyond individual farms. We are working to create a collaborative agricutural environmental ecosystem where farmers, landowners, conservation partners, educators, families, and community members can learn, participate, and grow together.
This ecosystem includes:
-
Sustainable agriculture and conservation practices.
-
Land stewardship and restoration initiatives.
-
Community health and wellness programming.
-
Environmental education and leadership development.
-
Research and demonstration projects.
-
Opportunities for connection, reflection, and personal growth.
